About John Alston
My name is John Alston, and I have been a self-employed professional dry stone waller since 2006, following a career in IT.
I am based in Stocksbridge, Sheffield and mostly work in the South Yorkshire area but have also built in Derbyshire and West Yorkshire, so have experience of several stone types.
I am a Professional member of the national Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (DSWA(GB)), and an active member of the local South Yorkshire branch.
The range of work I do covers repair and restoration of existing walls, new builds of free standing & retaining walls, garden features, etc. for residential, agricultural and commercial clients.
I have also run training courses for several organisations, and am one of the instructors used by the National Stone Centre in Derbyshire. I can tailor a course to your specific requirements.
I recently had the opportunity to go to the Cévennes National Park, France, to work with members of L'association des Artisans Bâtisseurs en Pierres Sèches (ABPS); a French professional dry stone walling organization.
I currently hold the DSWA Intermediate walling certificate, LANTRA Level 2 certificate, and the DSWA Initial Instructor certificate.
I have been CRB/DBS checked, have a current First Aid certificate, and Public Liability insurance.
I provide free quotes and advice for jobs, both large and small.
